Brian + Adam :: 09.01.18 :: Union Horse Distillery, Lenexa Kansas

Adam and Brian had an absolutely beautiful wedding at Union Horse Distillery (Love that Place!) There were so many sweet little moments between the two of them, and a few happy tears too. Brian & Adam have the most infectious smiles and laughs around. . I’ve had constant permagrin while working on these images. If your cheeks don’t hurt from smiling by the time you get to the end of this blog, then there might be something wrong with you.

2018-09-19_0031.jpg2018-09-19_0014.jpgThe guys chose copper to be the centerpiece of their decor, and man-oh-man was it gorgeous. To tie into the copper (and distillery) theme, each guest received a copper Moscow Mule mug as a thank you. The guys also decided to splurge on an amazingly cool backdrop from Ultrapom — that thing was so cool!

One of my most favorite parts of the day was their ceremony. Surrounded by their family and friends; Adam’s friend and work colleague, Patrick performed the ceremony. As an attorney, Adam has worked with Patrick, who is a Judge, on several cases. I loved that he brought something from his passion to the ceremony, especially this passage:

“No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice, and family. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. Marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves. Their hope is not to be condemned to live in loneliness, excluded from one of civilization’s oldest institutions. They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right. ”

This was an excerpt from the U.S. Supreme Court case Obergefell v. Hodges which is known as the “gay marriage case.”  When this case was decided in 2015, Adam said he felt, “for the first time, accepted and no longer different than everyone else.”  Adam also mentioned that, “It makes me cry every time I read the opinion because it perfectly sums up the struggle LGBTQ people have had.  The best part of the opinion is at the very end and that’s why we included it in the ceremony.”

The guys also wanted to mention that “They both are so grateful to have such loving and accepting families.  It really made our day more special having their support.  I was worried going into it that our wedding would feel different than other weddings, or that it would seem weird because we are gay.  But throughout the whole day I felt nothing but love and support for us, and that made the day feel like a true celebration of our love.  Our wedding felt completely natural and for that I am so grateful.”

I too, am grateful for the opportunity to work with you two. When I first started this Wedding Photography gig, I had several LGBTQ friends that sent me out of state to photograph their wedding. I was part thankful that the option was there, (that is if you could afford to get married out of state) but more so, I was so heartbroken that love (of all the things in this world) that LOVE was band? How could this be. So I knew from that moment that I would use “this platform” to promote marriage equality.

That Love IS Love.

Because, especially in today’s world, we could all use as much love as we can get.

I’m proud to be an ally.

Thank you Adam and Brian for choosing us to photograph your wedding. It was a total honor to get to spend the day with you two, and I’m so thankful that our paths crossed. Much Love, xomo
